Enoshima Island (sea caves, pagoda and Fuji views)

Kamakura · Enoshima / Fujisawa · Nature, Viewpoints

500 ¥ per person

Small rocky island 30 min from Kamakura with shrines, sea caves, the Samuel Cocking garden and Fuji views; free access to the island.

Enoshima is an island-rock 600 metres in diameter linked to the Fujisawa coast by a 600-metre footbridge, and one of the most complete points of interest on the Kantō coastline. The island packs into its rocky slopes a route that climbs from the harbour to the summit with very varied attractions: the shrine of the three sea goddesses (Enoshima-jinja), the Iwaya caves carved by marine erosion into the basalt rock up to 152 metres deep (admission 500 ¥), the Samuel Cocking Garden with the 59-metre SEA CANDLE observation tower with views of Mount Fuji (combined admission 1.000 ¥), and the Enoshima Iwaya thermal spa with a bath in heated seawater. On clear days (especially in winter) the view of Fuji over the sea from the observation tower is absolutely exceptional. Access to the island and its shopping streets is free; the indoor attractions have individual admission. It is reached on the Enoden line from Kamakura to Enoshima station (25 minutes) or on the Odakyu train from Fujisawa.
