Hakone Ropeway
Japan's longest ropeway connects Sounzan with Togendai crossing Owakudani; views of Fuji and the volcano; ~1.400 ¥ per leg.
The Hakone Ropeway is the longest in Japan, with four kilometres of cables connecting Sounzan station with Togendai, on the northern shore of Lake Ashi, crossing the spectacular volcanic valley of Owakudani. The full ride takes about 30 minutes and crosses landscapes that change radically: from the green forest of the southern slope to the lunar, sulphurous landscape of Owakudani, and from there to the panoramic views of Lake Ashi with Mount Fuji in the background. The cabins are modern and have large windows; the side ones offer the best views. The price is about 1.400 ¥ per leg (Sounzan-Togendai) or it is included in the Hakone Free Pass. Sounzan station is reached on the Hakone Tozan rack railway from Hakone-Yumoto. In the event of heightened volcanic activity, the section over Owakudani may close temporarily. The best time for cloudless views of Fuji is first thing in the morning or on clear winter days.
