Higashiyama walk (temples and forest trail)
A 3,5 km walk among more than 13 temples and shrines east of the city with views of the Alps; free access.
The Higashiyama walk in Takayama is one of the most peaceful and spiritual strolls in the Japanese Alps: a 3,5 km trail that connects thirteen Buddhist temples and five Shinto shrines built on the wooded slopes east of the city. The path runs among centuries-old cedars and maples, passing moss-covered slab cemeteries, bronze bells, small waterfalls and a viewpoint over the Takayama valley. The most travelled stretch is the one starting at Soyuji temple and ending at Shiroyama shrine, with views over the rooftops of the historic centre. In spring the cherry and plum trees along the trail are spectacular; in autumn the momiji (Japanese maple) turns the route into a tunnel of red and golden colours. Access is completely free. The full route takes between an hour and a half and two hours at a relaxed pace. It starts from the Kajibashi bridge, a ten-minute walk from Sanmachi-suji. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water.
