Kanazawa's second tea-house district, more intimate and less visited than Higashi; stroll and craft shops free.

Nishi Chaya is the second tea-house district of Kanazawa, located west of the historic centre and much quieter and more authentic than Higashi Chaya. Despite its smaller size —barely two blocks of Edo-period wooden machiya— it preserves an extraordinarily intimate atmosphere that lets you sense what life was like in these districts two centuries ago. On the main street you will find some local craft shops (Kutani ceramics, lacquer, wagashi sweets) and a small free municipal gallery displaying the costumes and tools of the area's geisha tradition. Strolling the district is completely free. Unlike Higashi Chaya, here you will rarely find crowds of tourists, which makes it the perfect place for quiet photos and unhurried shopping. It is a five-minute walk from the Nagamachi district and ten from the 21st Century Museum. The Kanazawa Loop tourist bus passes the Hirokoji stop.
