Rickshaw ride through Takayama

Takayama · Sanmachi · Tradition, Viewpoints

Tour the historic centre of Takayama in a rickshaw pulled by a local guide who tells you the history of the district; rides from around 3.000 ¥.

The historic centre of Takayama, with its streets of Edo-era wooden houses, is a perfect place to discover aboard a traditional rickshaw. The puller, besides pulling the cart, acts as a guide and cheerfully explains the history of the city as you travel through the Sanmachi area, the bridges over the Miyagawa river and the most picturesque corners of the old district, known as the little Kyoto of Hida. From the raised seat of the rickshaw you enjoy a different perspective of the district and reach spots that would otherwise go unnoticed comfortably. There are rides of different lengths, and the shortest ones start at around 3.000 ¥. The driver usually helps you take photos at the best spots. It is an ideal plan for couples, families or people who prefer not to walk much, and a very pleasant way to give context to a visit to the historic centre. It is booked in the Sanmachi area itself, in the heart of traditional Takayama.
