Shinjuku Batting Center
A classic batting cage behind Kabukicho; several rounds of balls from a few hundred yen, a cheap activity.
The Shinjuku Batting Center is a genuine relic of popular Tokyo, hidden behind the bustling Kabukicho and a few steps from the neon of the nightclubs. With a retro atmosphere and eleven batting cages, this place has been a meeting point for decades for locals looking to let off steam by hitting balls thrown at between 70 and 130 km/h. The experience is simple: you put coins into the machine and get a round of 25 pitches for only 300 ¥. Glove rental costs 100 ¥; the bats are free. There are cages for beginners and for more experienced batters, so anyone can take part. It opens from 10:00 to 4:00 in the early morning, which makes it one of the most original and cheapest night plans in Tokyo. It is reached from Higashi-Shinjuku station (Oedo line) via exit A1, or a ten-minute walk from the east exit of Shinjuku. Bring comfortable clothes and plenty of enthusiasm.
