Sumida Aquarium Tokyo Skytree
A modern aquarium in the Skytree complex; adult admission about 2.500 ¥.
The Sumida Aquarium is one of the most modern and spectacular aquariums in Tokyo, located on floors 5 and 6 of the Tokyo Solamachi complex, at the base of the Tokyo Skytree. Its most striking feature is the largest open indoor tank in Japan —350.000 litres of water— where dozens of penguins and fur seals swim freely with no glass separation on top. In addition to the main tank, the jellyfish hall —the "Big Petri"— stands out, a space of dim light and soft music where around 500 moon jellyfish float in illuminated cylinders, creating a hypnotic atmosphere. The aquarium houses more than 10.000 specimens of more than 260 species. Admission for adults costs 2.500 ¥ and is available on the official website or on platforms such as Klook with discounts. There is a combined pass with the Skytree's Tembo Deck viewpoint that works out cheaper if you plan to visit both. The usual hours are 10:00 to 20:00 (until 21:00 at the weekend). To get there, take the metro to Oshiage (Asakusa or Hanzomon lines) and follow the signs to Tokyo Solamachi.
