Sushi Zanmai in the Tsukiji Outer Market is an essential stop for lovers of fresh fish in Tokyo. The chain, founded by the legendary "Tuna King" Kiyoshi Kimura, has its most famous branch right at the entrance to the outer market, recognisable by the statue of its founder at the door. It opens 24 hours, which makes it an excellent option for an early start and joining the morning bustle of Tsukiji. Tuna is the undisputed star: you can order nigiri of different cuts (maguro, chutoro, otoro) or opt for an assorted set of ten to thirteen pieces ranging between 2.000 and 3.000 ¥. A full visit with varied trays and a drink usually comes to between 3.000 and 4.000 ¥ per person. The quality is far higher than you would expect for the price given that access to the fresh fish is direct. Arrive before 8:00 to experience the market atmosphere and avoid the midday queues.
