Tokyo sushi-making class

Tokyo · Tokyo (centre) · Gastronomy, Workshops

A cooking class to learn to make sushi at a Tokyo cooking school; usually costs 8.000-15.000 ¥.

Learning to make sushi with a Japanese chef is one of the gastronomic experiences most valued by travellers in Tokyo. The classes are held in small groups (generally between 4 and 12 people) at local cooking schools or in the homes of professional chefs, and last between 2 and 3 hours. Under the guidance of the master you will learn to prepare the sushi rice with the correct seasoning, to cut the fish correctly and to form different types of sushi: nigiri, maki and temaki. At the end of the class you sit down to eat what you have made. The price varies by format: from around 5.000-8.000 ¥ for standard group classes to 15.000 ¥ or more for private experiences or those in chefs' homes. Many schools operate in the districts of Asakusa, Shinjuku or Tsukishima and offer instruction in English. Book in advance on platforms such as Airbnb Experiences, GetYourGuide, Viator or Cookly. It is a very popular plan for families, couples and groups of friends looking for an edible souvenir of Japan and a skill they can replicate at home.
