Zojo-ji Temple
A temple next to Tokyo Tower with Jizo statues and ample grounds to stroll; free entry.
The Zojo-ji temple is one of the most impressive historic monuments in Tokyo, especially for its location: the great 17th-century Sangedatsumon gate stands directly in front of Tokyo Tower in red and orange, forming one of the most iconic photographs of the city. This Buddhist temple of the Jodo school houses the mausoleums of six Tokugawa shoguns and their families, which gives it a unique historical depth. To the right of the main hall you will find the moving corner of the Jizo statues, hundreds of small stone figures dressed in knitted clothes and decorated with toys, dedicated by parents to the children who could not be born. The grounds are free to visit. The Treasure Gallery with historical objects charges 700 ¥. The temple opens from 9:00 to 17:00 every day. It is reached in ten minutes' walk from Onarimon or Daimon station (Oedo line). Combine it with the climb up Tokyo Tower, which is right next door.
