Calligraphy workshop or tea ceremony
A cultural experience to learn Japanese calligraphy or the steps of the tea ceremony.
Japanese calligraphy and tea-ceremony workshops are two of the most sought-after cultural experiences among travellers who come to Japan wanting to go beyond superficial tourism. In Osaka, several cultural centres (such as Maikoya, near Namba) offer both activities combined or separately, with instruction in English and authentic settings. In the tea ceremony you will learn the ritual movements of chado, the way of tea: how to whisk the matcha with the chasen, how to hold the bowl and the meaning of each gesture; the session lasts about 40 minutes. In the calligraphy (shodo) workshop you will learn to handle the brush with ink on rice paper to trace basic Japanese characters under the guidance of the instructor; you usually take your work home as a souvenir. Prices vary according to the provider and the duration, but are usually between 3.000 and 6.000 yen per person. There are options that also include wearing a kimono during the activity. Book in advance as the groups are very small to guarantee personalised attention. It is an especially recommended experience for those who travel with an interest in traditional Japanese culture.
