Edo Wonderland Nikko (the feudal-Japan theme park)

Nikko · Kinugawa / Nikko · Theme parks, Tradition

5.800 ¥ per person

A theme park with actors dressed as samurai, ninja and geisha across a 331.000 m² set of Edo architecture; entry 2.900-4.800 ¥.

Edo Wonderland Nikko (Nikko Edomura) is the most elaborate historical theme park in Japan: a 331.000-square-metre site built with traditional craft techniques that recreates a complete town of the Edo period (1603-1868) with more than twenty authentic buildings, including a market street, a kabuki theatre district, a travellers' inn, a samurai residence, a shogunate torture hall and the ninja quarter. Unlike other theme parks, the staff stay completely in character: actors dressed as samurai patrol the streets, ninja give acrobatic demonstrations, geisha serve tea, and shows of kabuki theatre, kyogen comedy and fire magic are performed several times a day in the park's theatres. Visitors can dress up as a samurai, ninja or oiran for an extra 1.000 to 3.000 ¥. General admission costs 2.900 ¥ for adults (combinations with shows are available). Hours: 9:00-17:00. It is reached from Nikko station by bus in 15 minutes.
