Kimono rental in Gion
Rent a kimono or yukata and stroll the historic streets of Gion or Higashiyama; basic package from ~2.000 ¥.
Strolling dressed in a kimono through the historic streets of Gion or Higashiyama is one of the most popular and photogenic experiences in Kyoto, and it is within reach of any traveller. Numerous rental shops offer packages that include the kimono or yukata (lighter summer version), the zori (traditional sandals), the accessories and, in the case of women, the hairstyle. Underwear and belongings are kept at the shop during the walk. The basic packages start at around 2.000 ¥, although the average with hairstyle and full accessories is between 3.000 and 5.000 ¥. The most recommended shops in Gion are Kimono Rental Wakana and Okamoto; near Kiyomizudera there are several more options. The ideal is to rent the kimono first thing in the morning to enjoy it for as long as possible. Return is usually before 17:30-18:00. The most popular route combines the streets of Higashiyama, Sannenzaka, Ninenzaka and Gion in a single 2-3 hour walk.
