Kiyomizuyaki ceramics workshop

Kyoto · Higashiyama · Tradition, Workshops

Learn to shape or paint ceramics in the traditional Kyoto style at a workshop near Kiyomizudera; from ~3.000 ¥.

Kiyomizuyaki ceramics —also called kyoyaki— is the traditional pottery style of Kyoto, known for its delicate designs, its colourful glazes and the influence of the aesthetics of the tea ceremony. It is made in the Higashiyama district, near Kiyomizudera temple, and has a history dating back to the Momoyama period (16th-17th centuries). Several workshops near the temple offer hands-on experiences where you can shape your own piece on a potter's wheel or decorate an already-moulded piece with the motifs you choose. The workshops last between 60 and 90 minutes and the average price is about 3.000 ¥ per person. The piece is fired and sent to your address weeks later (national shipping is usually included; international shipping has an additional cost). It is a perfect activity for both adults and children. Book in advance, especially in high season. The Kiyomizuyaki no Sato Matsuri festival (third weekend of October) is the best time to buy pieces with big discounts directly from the artisans.
