Kyoto Railway Museum
Railway museum next to Umekoji park with 53 historic trains and a driving simulator; adult admission around 1.500 ¥.
The Kyoto Railway Museum is an ideal visit for families and train enthusiasts, and one of the best ways to understand the railway history of Japan. Located next to Umekoji park, a stone's throw from Kyoto station, it brings together 53 real vehicles ranging from old steam locomotives to the first Shinkansen bullet trains, plus a realistic driving simulator (with same-day booking), giant models and interactive exhibitions on how the railway network works. Outside, a historic roundhouse with steam locomotives is preserved and, in some time slots, you can ride a short steam-train journey. Adult admission is around 1.500 ¥, with reduced rates for students and children. It opens from 10:00 to 17:00 and closes on Wednesdays except holidays and school holidays. It is reached on foot in about 20 minutes from Kyoto station or by train to Umekoji-Kyotonishi. It is advisable to buy the ticket online to enter faster and to allow at least two hours for the visit.
