Hiroshima · Miyajima / Hatsukaichi · Nature, Viewpoints

1.840 ¥ per person

Ropeway ascent to the sacred peak of Miyajima with views of the Seto Inland Sea; ropeway 1.840 ¥ round trip.

Mount Misen, at 535 metres tall, is the highest summit on the island of Miyajima and one of the oldest sacred places of Buddhism in Japan. The monk Kobo Daishi lit an eternal flame here more than 1.200 years ago that still burns without going out. You can climb on foot by three forest routes (45-90 minutes) or by ropeway from the Momijidani station. The ropeway costs 1.840 ¥ round trip for adults (920 ¥ for children) and climbs in two sections with a transfer. From the summit, on clear days, you can see up to 22 islands of the Seto Inland Sea and, with luck, Mount Fuji in the distance. There is also a small group of temples and a meditation cave. The visit can be combined with the Itsukushima shrine (ID 182) for a full day on the island. The last ropeway goes down before 17:00; check the updated timetable before going up.
