Namba Yasaka Shrine
A small shrine with a stage in the shape of a giant lion's head, perfect for curious photos.
The Namba Yasaka Shrine is probably the most peculiar and photogenic shrine in Osaka. What distinguishes it from any other is its central element: an enormous stage in the shape of a lion's head 12 metres tall, with its mouth completely open towards the sky. According to Shinto belief, this mouth devours evil spirits and attracts good fortune, especially in business and studies. The construction has a very special retro charm, as it was inaugurated in 1974. Although the shrine is relatively small, the contrast between the sober Shinto aesthetic and this extravagant structure makes it a place that leaves no one indifferent. Entry is completely free. The shrine is open throughout the day. To get there, walk about ten minutes from Namba station (subway Midosuji, Sennichimae or Yotsubashi lines), following the streets west of Dotonbori. The best time to photograph it is early in the morning, when there are no crowds; the early light highlights the lion's head against the blue sky. It is worth combining it with a stroll through Dotonbori.
