Sagano Torokko scenic train
A 7,3 km scenic train between Arashiyama and Kameoka with views of the Hozu river gorge; ticket ~880 ¥.
The Sagano Torokko scenic train is one of the most picturesque train rides in Japan. For 7,3 km it travels at slow speed along the Hozu river gorge between Arashiyama and Kameoka, offering spectacular views of the river channelled between wooded walls that change colour with the seasons: intense green in summer, scarlet in autumn. The open carriages let you feel the forest air and hear the sound of the river. The one-way ticket costs 880 ¥ for adults and 440 ¥ for children. The train operates from 1 March to 29 December; the service is suspended in winter. There are eight daily departures from Torokko-Saga station (next to Arashiyama) between 9:02 and 17:10. It is essential to book in advance in spring and autumn, as the tickets sell out weeks ahead. You can combine the outward train journey with the return by traditional boat down the Hozu river, a memorable full-day outing.
