Tasting at the Nishiki market

Kyoto · Nakagyo (Nishiki) · Gastronomy

A free route through the 100+ stalls of "Kyoto's kitchen" with tofu, tsukemono, wagashi and mochi; spend approx. 1.500-2.500 ¥.

The Nishiki market is the gastronomic heart of Kyoto, popularly known as "Kyoto's kitchen". A covered passage barely 4 metres wide and 400 metres long houses more than 100 stalls and shops where the most genuine products of Kyoto cuisine are sold and tasted: fresh tofu and yuba (soy-milk skin), tsukemono (traditional pickles), wagashi (seasonal sweets), mochi, artisanal dashi, seafood and small street bites to eat on the spot. Free tasting as you stroll costs around 1.500 to 2.500 ¥ if you try five or six things. The best time to visit is early in the morning, when the food is freshest and the flow of visitors is lower. Most stalls open from 9:00 to 18:00. To get there, take the Karasuma subway line to Shijo station (10 minutes from Kyoto station) and walk 3 minutes east. The market runs parallel to Shijo street.
