Toei Uzumasa Eigamura (Japanese film park)
Theme park where thousands of period dramas were filmed; feudal-Japan sets and live shows; admission ~2.400 ¥.
Toei Uzumasa Eigamura —renamed Uzumasa Kyoto Village— is the only theme park in Japan built on the real sets of a film studio. The facilities of the Toei production company, active since the 1950s, have been the setting for thousands of jidaigeki (historical-period) dramas and samurai series. In the park you can walk streets that recreate feudal Japan —from a peasant village to the entertainment district of the Edo era— and sometimes you can witness the filming of real productions. The attractions include ninja shows, houses of mirrors, exhibitions on the special effects of Japanese cinema and a shinobi-themed escape room. Period-costume rental (samurai, ninja or maiko) is available. Admission costs 2.400 ¥ for adults. It usually opens from 9:00 to 17:00. To get there, take the Keifuku Arashiyama train to Uzumasa-Koryuji station (2 minutes). Plan for two or three hours minimum.
