Yuigahama Beach (the urban beach of Kamakura)

The most central beach in Kamakura, a 15-min walk from the station, with the hills as a backdrop; free access.

Yuigahama beach is the most accessible beach in Kamakura, a strip of grey sand almost two kilometres long stretching in front of the city with the forested hills of Kanagawa prefecture as a backdrop and the Pacific horizon open towards Enoshima. In summer (July and August) the beach becomes the most popular destination for the summer crowds of greater Tokyo: wooden beach huts (umi no ie, literally "houses of the sea"), yakisoba and ice-cream stalls, rental surfboards and plastic bunting fill the sand. The best season to visit it without crowds is spring and autumn, when the temperature is pleasant for a walk along the shore and access is completely relaxed. The scenery is especially beautiful at sunset, with the silhouettes of Enoshima and the Miura Peninsula in the background. Access is free. From Kamakura station it is reached on foot in 15 minutes or by bus in 5 minutes. The Enoden line has the Yuigahama stop 3 minutes from the beach. The gastronomic speciality to try is the shirasu-don (fresh or cooked anchovy fry over rice) in the restaurants by the beach.
