Itoshima, on the coast west of Fukuoka, has become one of the trendy destinations in Kyushu, nicknamed little Hawaii for its beaches, its Californian-style cafés and its charming spots. This day trip by bus takes you to its most photogenic points without having to drive: the married rocks of Sakurai Futamigaura, joined by a sacred rope and crowned by a white torii facing the sea; swings and panoramic frames by the coast designed for photos; and often stops such as Ichiran no Mori, the theme park of the famous ramen chain, or mountain temples. The tour starts at around 8.000 ¥ and usually lasts about six hours. Bring comfortable shoes, sun protection and the camera, because the appeal of Itoshima is above all scenic and photographic. It is advisable to book in advance. It is an ideal trip for those who already know the centre of Fukuoka and want to discover the coastal and relaxed face of the region, very different from the urban atmosphere of Hakata and Nakasu.
