Urban park with a large artificial lake surrounded by cherry trees and island walkways; free access, rowing boats ~600 ¥/hour.

Ohori Park is the most important green lung of Fukuoka, built in 1926 on the former water defences (outer moat) of Fukuoka Castle. Its artificial lake, 2 kilometres in perimeter, is divided by two walkways into three islands joined by bridges, creating a landscape reminiscent of the West Lake of Hangzhou (China) on which the design was originally based. The walk along the circular path around the lake —dotted with pines, willows and, in spring, hundreds of cherry trees— takes about forty minutes at a relaxed pace and is one of the most popular jogging and strolling spots in the city. Rental of rowing boats and pedal boats is available for 600-800 ¥ per hour. The Fukuoka Art Museum is at the southern end of the park. In winter the lake attracts migratory ducks and in summer the lotuses of the northern pond bloom in blue and pink. Access to the park is completely free. Ohorikoen station (subway line 3) is a three-minute walk from the main entrance.
