Museum of modern Japanese and international art at the top of Hijiyama park; admission ~360 ¥ for the permanent collection.
The Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art is located at the top of Mount Hijiyama, an elevated park south of the city centre that also offers panoramic views of Hiroshima and good picnic areas. The museum, opened in 1989, has a permanent collection focused on post-war Japanese and international art with special emphasis on artists from the Chugoku region, and organises high-quality temporary exhibitions throughout the year. Admission to the permanent collection costs 360 ¥ for adults. The temporary exhibitions are priced separately (800-1.200 ¥). Hours: 10:00-17:00, closed on Mondays. Hijiyama park is also known for its cherry trees in spring and for housing the Hiroshima Manga Library (separate admission). It is reached by bus from Hiroshima station to the Hijiyama-shita stop and then a 15-minute walk uphill, or by tram to Hijiyama-shita (line 5). A quiet excursion away from the historic circuit.
