Nightlife in the Nagarekawa district
The largest district of bars and izakayas in western Japan; drinks and dinner for 2.000-3.000 ¥ per person.
Nagarekawa is the liveliest nightlife district in Hiroshima, a labyrinth of lanes packed with bars, izakayas, karaokes and restaurants that stretches south of the city centre. With more than 2.000 establishments in just a few blocks, it is one of the densest nightlife districts in western Japan. The atmosphere is markedly local: Japanese office workers who stretch out the night over yakitori skewers and glasses of shochu. The prices are reasonable; many izakayas have two- or three-hour menus with free drinks (nomi-hodai) for 2.500-3.000 ¥. The district comes alive from 19:00 and reaches its peak between 22:00 and midnight. It is reached by tram to Kamiyacho (lines 1, 2 and 6) and the district is a ten-minute walk away. Bring cash, as many small venues do not accept cards. Ideal to combine with an oyster dinner at Kanawa before the round of bars.
