Rabbit Island (Okunoshima): day trip
Trip to Okunoshima, the island inhabited by hundreds of free-roaming rabbits you can feed; tour from around 8.000 ¥.
Okunoshima, known all over the world as Rabbit Island, is one of the most unusual places in Japan: a small island in the Seto Inland Sea where hundreds of tame rabbits live freely and approach visitors in search of food. This trip takes you from Hiroshima to the pier and, after a short ferry ride, you can stroll among the rabbits and feed them (the feed is bought at the terminal). The island also has a dark historical past as a former secret gas factory during the Second World War, the remains of which are still preserved and can be toured. The tour starts at around 8.000 ¥ and usually takes up much of the day because of the distance. Bring water, sun protection and comfortable shoes, and remember not to hold the food up high because the rabbits jump. It is an endearing and very photogenic experience, perfect for families and animal lovers, and a very different side of Hiroshima prefecture from its better-known monuments.
