Shukkeien Garden

Hiroshima · Naka-ku / Shukkeien · Nature, Tradition

260 ¥ per person

Classic Japanese garden from 1620 restored after the bomb; admission 260 ¥, spectacular in cherry-blossom season and autumn.

The Shukkeien garden, designed in 1620 by the scholar Ueda Soko, reproduces mountains, bays and islands in miniature around a central pond in the most refined landscape style of the Edo era. Completely destroyed by the atomic bomb in 1945 and restored with historical precision between 1949 and 1951, today it is an oasis of serenity in the centre of Hiroshima. It is especially beautiful during the cherry blossom in spring and when the maples turn red in autumn. The walk on foot lasts between 45 minutes and an hour. Admission costs 260 ¥ for adults (150 ¥ for secondary-school students, 100 ¥ for primary). Hours: 9:00-18:00 (until 17:00 from October to March). Closed in the last days of December. It is reached by tram to Shukkeien-mae (line 9) or by bus from Hiroshima station. Ten minutes from the Memorial Park, it is the perfect stop before or after the historic tour.
