Tea ceremony and calligraphy in Miyajima

Hiroshima · Miyajima · Tradition, Workshops

Experience the tea ceremony, Japanese calligraphy and the making of higashi sweets on the island of Miyajima; from around 3.000 ¥.

Miyajima is not only the floating torii: the sacred island is also a perfect place to immerse yourself calmly in traditional Japanese culture. In this experience you take part in a guided tea ceremony, in which you learn the etiquette for preparing and enjoying matcha, try Japanese calligraphy (shodo) with brush and ink, and make higashi sweets, the delicate dry confections that accompany the tea. All in a serene atmosphere and with explanations designed for foreign visitors. The experience starts at around 3.000 ¥ and usually lasts about an hour, which makes it easy to combine with the visit to the Itsukushima shrine, the climb up Mount Misen or a stroll through the island's streets. It is advisable to book the slot in advance. It is a quiet and very complete activity, ideal for couples, families and anyone who wants to go beyond the photo of the torii and take home an authentic cultural experience from one of the most beautiful places in Japan.
