The Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, opened in 1999 in the Kawabata district near the Naka river, is the only museum in the world dedicated exclusively to the collection, research and presentation of contemporary Asian art. The permanent collection includes more than 2.700 works by artists from 22 Asian countries and regions —China, India, South Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Mongolia—, with painting, sculpture, photography, installations and digital arts that reflect the social, political and cultural transformations of Asia from the 20th century to the present. The museum is organised into themed galleries grouping works by region and by period, with explanatory panels in Japanese and English. Admission to the permanent collection costs 200 ¥ for adults; the temporary exhibitions are priced separately. Hours: 10:00-20:00 (last access 19:30), closed on Wednesdays. It is in the Hakata Riverain building, above the Riverain Mall shopping complex, next to the Shofuku-ji temple. Easy to combine with a stroll around Nakasu.
