Nakasu (the island of bars, clubs and night yatai)
The island of Nakasu, between two rivers, concentrates the highest density of bars, clubs and restaurants in Kyushu; an active night from 2.000-4.000 ¥.
The island of Nakasu, caught between the Naka river and the Hakata river in the heart of Fukuoka, is the densest nightlife district in Kyushu and one of the most active in Japan. The concentration of venues is astonishing: in barely 500 metres long and 200 wide fit more than 3.000 bars, clubs, karaokes, izakayas, snack bars, yakitori restaurants and, on the riverbank, the most famous row of night yatai in Fukuoka. The west bank of the Naka river, with the illuminated yatai reflected in the water, is one of the most photogenic night-time scenes in all of western Japan. The lower part of Nakasu (Nishi-nakasu) has the most sophisticated bars and the cocktail counters; the upper part (Higashi-nakasu) has the karaokes and the liveliest venues until 4:00-5:00. A night with dinner at a yatai, drinks at a bar and karaoke is around 3.000-5.000 ¥ per person. The area is accessible on foot from Nakasu-Kawabata (subway) or Tenjin stations. The best night to visit it is Thursday or Friday, when the activity reaches its peak without the saturation of Saturday.
